Theatremakers from all over Sacramento gathered for the announcement of the 436 nominations for the Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance’s Elly Awards Saturday night at the West Sacramento Community Center.
SARTA’s Elly’s are the Sacramento area equivalent of the Tony Awards, with recognition for all aspects of production from lead and supporting actor and actress to costume, lighting, sound and set design to music direction and choreography to overall production in a seven different categories.
Seventy-six theaters submitted 240 shows for consideration. Fifty-eight theaters and 127 of those productions received nominations (that’s 76 percent of the eligible theaters receiving nominations, and about 53 percent of the productions).
The theaters with the most nominations included Roseville theatre Arts Academy (42 nominations – 36 youth programs and 6 adult – up from the No. 2 position last year, and increasing its nomination count by 12 from last year’s number), Sutter Street Theatre (31 – 28 y, 3 a), Big Idea Theatre (23- 9 y, 14 a), St. Mary’s High School (17 – all youth), Christian Brothers High School (17 – all youth) and The Acting Company (12 y, 5 a). The youth production with the most nominations was How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at Christian Brothers High School with 11 nominations, and the adult production with the most nods was Death of a Salesman at San Joaquin Delta College, also with 11.
SARTA will host two ceremonies in September to announce the winners of the Elly’s. The Youth Elly Award Ceremony will be on Sunday, September 13 at 7 p.m. at the Cosumnes Oaks High School Performing Arts Center, and the Adult Elly Award Ceremony will be on Sunday September 27 at 7 p.m. at the Elks Lodge No. 6 in Sacramento. Tickets for the Youth Elly’s will be on sale today, and tickets for the Adult Elly’s will go on sale Monday, August 31.
